Aftercare – Part 2

Unfortunately my insurance company denied the EXCEPTION that was requested for a closer option for aftercare for my daughter.  My family is left with a good option that offers everything needed except proximity.  😔☹️😕😳

The aftercare facility, SMV,

  • supports personality disorders
  • utilizes Dialectic Behavior Therapy
  • offers a PHP/Partial Hospitalization Program (Monday thru Friday 9a-3p) for $2200/per/day
  • offers a step-down IOP/Intensive Outpatient Program (Monday-Wednesday-Friday 9a-1p)
  • is 90-100 minutes from where my daughter will be living

My husband and I are not comfortable with our girl driving 90-100 minutes to SMV, aftercare facility, there and back each day.  As a result we rented a house that is 10 minutes from SMV, aftercare facility.  We will take turns spending weeks in the rental house to ensure our daughter is supported.

My husband is not happy with this answer for a multitude of reasons.  He contacted the Kansas Insurance Commission for support early last week for answers and support.  Now that we have a DENIAL of our EXCEPTION from the insurance company the Kansas Insurance Commission can move to help us gain a better answer for our daughter.

Since our daughter is leaving Menninger in Houston, Texas next week we needed a aftercare program to at least support her as she moves to emerge back into real life.  She will visit the facility on Friday of next week to tour, meet staff, complete paperwork and answer any questions.

I am a mom of a beautiful, intelligent, articulate, creative eighteen year old freshman college girl who has recently been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. When my first born girl went away to college this past fall we knew she suffered with anxiety and depression. As time went on and there was never any balance despite psychiatrists prescribing individualized medication, therapists, supports put into place, changes constantly arranged, cleaning up trails of wreckage and chaos after thunderous disasters we began to realize we needed a more thorough look into out beautiful disaster. The past year has been difficult to say the least. Along with navigating a freshman college student with mental illness we have become co-dependent parents in a vicious cycle of reacting to our girls ups and downs. I have high hopes this BLOG can bring some much needed processing, learning, realizations and perhaps a little peace.

    That’s such a shame your insurance company did not come through for you – the whole situation is trying enough without financial issues as well. I hope everything works out for you with this living arrangement Jennifer. So your dad is out of the picture then with the new arrangement I guess?

      No, my daughter will be at SMV, aftercare facility, Monday thru Friday 8-3p then to rental. On Friday night, Saturday and Sunday she will be with my dad. At least that’s what it looks like for 2-3 weeks while in the PHP(Partial Hospitalization Program).

        I see – then after when aftercare is done, the rental home then. Still a shame you are picking up the tab for so many expenses. It will be worth it in the end though.
